DANVERS PUBLIC SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Assistant Superintendent

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

CLIENTS: Students, Staff, Parents, Community

SUPERVISES: Directors, Administrative Assistants, Office Staff

Review of applications will begin after January 2, 2025. The expected start date for the new Superintendent is July 1, 2025.

Qualifications:

Licensure as Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent
Administrative Experience
Teaching Experience
Master’s degree

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to the following):

Teaching and Learning

Supervise Curriculum Administrators/Team
Act as advisor to Superintendent on all teaching and learning matters
Interprets and recommends policies related to all areas of responsibility and recommends changes and/or   improvements where necessary
Oversee Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment budget
Oversee the district’s ESL program
Oversee district assessment programs both external (MCAS, ACCESS, etc) and internal (benchmark and common assessments)
Oversee the continued development and growth of the MTSS for Academics, SEL, Behavior, and Mental Health
Direct curriculum review, evaluation and revision and coordinate alignment between elementary and secondary levels
Monitor curriculum review cycles
Collaborate with EL Coordinators to identify program needs and ensure implementation
Monitor alignment between strategic plan and the frameworks for curriculum instruction and assessment
Increase Capacity for Meaningful Communication, about Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Leadership and School Culture

Attend School Committee meetings, prepare reports and keep the Committee informed  major developments in school programs
Articulate, from the direction of the District, a plan to meet the educational program requirements of the district
Provide guidance and direction to school Principals and Coordinators in a broad range of areas including but hi professional not limited to day-to-day operations,  development, evaluation, discipline, parent/guardian communications, scheduling and course offerings
Assist in the shaping of the school district’s culture and climate
Plan for the use of educational research
Serve as a spokesperson for district educational concerns

Policy and Governance

Adjust policies to meet State and Federal regulations and requirements
Know and apply standards involving civil and criminal liabilities
Work on Title VI and XI investigations as needed

Communication and Community Relations

Articulate district purposes and priorities to the staff, community, and media
Request and respond to community feedback
Demonstrate consensus building and conflict mediation
Apply communication skills to gain community support
Build coalitions to gain financial and programmatic support
Balance complex community demands in the best interests of students

Organizational Management

Define process for gathering, analyzing, and using data for decision-making
Establish priorities and apply problem-solving process
Delegate and empower at appropriate organizational levels ensuring effective and efficient use of distributed leadership
Implement effective budget process
Maintain accurate grant financial records

Human Resources Management

Implement effective staff evaluation and personnel procedures
Negotiates labor contracts successfully with Central Office team

Values and Ethics of Leadership

Understand and model appropriate value systems, ethics, and moral leadership
Implement the vision and core values of the district’s strategic plan

Primary Performance Outcomes:

Leads the district for curriculum, instruction and assessment
Partner with the Superintendent in the formulation of policy and decision-making regarding system-wide planning, finance and budget, teaching and learning initiatives, long-range plans, district goals and labor/employee relations issues
Responsible for entitlement and other grants to develop programming in the district
Develop Budgets and write and manage State, Federal and private grants
Serves as part of the district leadership team
Develop positive public, community and political relations
Coordinate tasks and prepare reports for DESE Tiered Focus Monitoring cycles

Secondary Performance Outcomes:

Supervises level based Curriculum Directors, Instructional Coaches, Teacher Leaders
Lead collaborative meetings with Principals, Coordinators, and new Administrators
Interprets and recommends policies related to all areas of responsibility and recommends changes and/or
improvements where necessary

Assists with all collective bargaining activities
Performs all other tasks as requested by the superintendent
Develop networks and resources through participation in professional organizations
Coordinate the duties of the curriculum Administrative Assistants/aides for the department
Provide for articulation with State and Federal standards and trends
Establish and implement an evaluation design for performance outcomes
Define and describe the integration and use of technology across the district
Lead district-wide data analysis
Conduct and facilitate System-Wide Professional Development
Assist principals in the hiring procedure of teaching staff

Assessment of Performance:

Massachusetts DESE Five Step Evaluation Cycle

QUALIFICATIONS:

-Master’s degree in Educational Administration or related field

-CAGS or Doctorate in area of competence preferred

-Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) license as Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent

-Demonstrated record of accomplishment in leadership and administration in a public or independent school environment

-Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

-Minimum of 7-10 years of professional experience in curriculum and instruction

-Knowledge of current trends in standards, curriculum development, instructional practices, assessment, educational technology and related staff development

-Knowledge of educator licensure and DESE requirements

-Competence in compliance with DESE, State and Federal laws and regulations regarding students, school and district accountability

-Effective conflict resolution skills
