Mary Bourque, Ed.D., Executive Director of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents (M.A.S.S.), issued the following statement about Governor Maura Healey’s announcement about the resignation of Dr. Patrick Tutwiler and the appointment of Dr. Stephen Zrike, Jr., as Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They are, respectively, former and current members of M.A.S.S.

Dr. Patrick Tutwiler embodies the commitment to equity and excellence in public education for which Massachusetts is nationally renowned. As Secretary of Education, and in more than two decades in school and district leadership roles, Patrick has demonstrated the utmost integrity, a collaborative leadership style, and a relentless focus on the needs of students and families. Over the past three years, he has led the Executive Office of Education with great courage, conviction, and a thoughtful approach to some of the most challenging issues facing public education today. We are grateful for Patrick’s outstanding service and wish him continued success in the next chapter of his distinguished career.

Dr. Stephen Zrike, Jr., is the perfect choice to serve as the next Secretary of Education. During his nearly 30 years in public education, including the past 13 years as Superintendent, Steve has earned a reputation as a smart, strategic leader with an unwavering commitment to ensuring the success of all students. He will bring to the role a keen understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing public school districts across the Commonwealth. Steve will be a tremendous asset to the Healey-Driscoll Administration in charting a bold course forward for public education in Massachusetts.
