Thank you, Governor Healey, for your work to protect our students and families from abuses by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

We were proud to join a press conference yesterday, where the Governor announced she has filed legislation to keep ICE out of schools, child care programs, courthouses, hospitals, and churches.

🔊 Today M.A.S.S. released a position paper about the proposed statewide graduation requirements.

⚖️ The position paper affirms our association’s commitment to a consistent set of standards applied evenly across all Massachusetts school districts in order to ensure equity and excellence.

🚩 It also outlines some of our concerns and objections, including:
- The accelerated pace and timeline for design, revision, adoption, and implementation;
- The number and breadth of proposed requirements;
- The need for flexibility in the requirements;
- The lack of details or implementation plan; and
- The costs associated with any new requirements.

📋 The position paper provides feedback about each of the seven graduation components proposed by the Governor’s Council, stating our endorsement of some and the need for adjustment and flexibility on others.

💡 See in particular our recommendation for the state to explore assessment of “power standards” rather than end-of-course assessments.
